The Joy of Goals
I was delighted this week to work with two faculty members in the vet school who are revising the curriculum for their program. I was showing them the learning modules and assessment tools, and they asked about linking their content to learning objectives. Blackboard Vista (eLC) has a terrific tool called "Goals" that is perfect for them. Using this tool, you can link from almost any content or activity to the appropriate goal or goals. Students can then see the content and activities that help them accomplish each of the goals listed. It's great for designers, too. When adding an activity, if it does not align with any of the listed goals, it becomes obvious that something is amiss. Either she has an unwritten goal in mind, or the activity is not appropriate for the course.

I'm kind of jealous of the work you get to do Sherry. I know I will get to be a part of the occasional interdisciplinary team but it seems like you get to do it on a daily basis! Luck-Y.
ReplyDeleteyeah, your job sounds fun! i imagine it takes a special kind of university professor to "admit" they could use help from a CTL (even though if we were all honest with ourselves, we'd have to admit we ALL could use help!). it seems like academia puts autonomy and independent work on such a ridiculous pedestal. i think it does the entire academic community a disservice.
ReplyDeletei will have to check out this goals feature and the journal feature you recommended to me too! i thought i knew eLC after two years with it but apparently not!
Y'all are correct - I am extremely lucky to do what I do, and truly blessed to love it. It can be difficult at times, like anything else, but it is incredibly rewarding to work with so many talented people in the university community. And you are spot on, Sarah. Most faculty tend to work very independently, especially with regard to their teaching. Research collaboration is much more common than collaborative teaching.
ReplyDeleteSherry, do you think you could take a few minutes one day to show us the Blackboard/eLC "Goals" feature? I've heard people talk about it and brag about its utility, but I'm still not sure how I might use the "Goals" function in one of my classes.
ReplyDelete@loggeloggs - Yes! Remind me if the LMS team does not cover that during their TTT.
